Dane County Farmer’s Market

SATURDAY MARKET: April 18 through July 4 and July 18 through November 7, 2015 (6:00am -2:00pm)  – Rain or shine, Location: Capitol Square

WEDNESDAY MARKET: April 22 through November 5, 2015 (8:30am -2:00pm) Rain or shine, Location: 200 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd

One of the largest producer only farmer’s markets in the country the Dane County Farmer’s Market has as many as 150 vendors at the Saturday market selling their Wisconsin grown or made products.  A rule that dates back the start of the market – all products must be grown or made in Wisconsin -hooray for local!

It’s a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning.  I have many happy memories lazily going from booth to booth buying items at random when my husband and I were young and kid-free, plus many happy memories with my daughters strapped to me in a carrier taking in all the sights, sounds smells (not to mention dropping fresh baked scone down my bra). An eclectic mix that will please the young and old.

Many special events take place in the spring and summer at the capitol and the market is still almost always open and occurring adjacently.  Here is a list of upcoming events: ps. last year we unknowingly were at the market on world naked bike ride day…my daughters still ask why those people were riding bikes without their clothes.

The farmers’ market is ALWAYS OPEN. The following events are adjacent to the market.
April 25 Crazy Legs Race
May 16 Syttende Mai Run
June 6 Cows on the Concourse
 June TBA  Safety Saturday
June 20  World Naked Bike Ride-11:00 am
July 11 Art Fair on the Square
Farmers’ Market Open but moves to Wilson St. at MLK, Jr. Blvd.

Tips for enjoying the markets with kids:

  • Use a carrier for infants and toddlers or an umbrella stroller…this will make squeezing between people and booths a little easier (bonus babies are able to see and take in the bright colors and patterns – hello brain development!)
  • Older kids will love playing farmer’s market bingo! Print out this Farmer’s Market Bingo and take a crayon – a perfect way to engage children to what they will find at the market.
  • Have snacks with you or pick up some popcorn or baked goods at the start of your day. Kids get hungry fast surrounded by all that food.
