The benefits of exercise are endless and undisputed – more energy, better sleep, heart healthy – the list goes on. Yoga is not only an effective method to get fit, but also a great way to reduce stress and dedicate time to your own well-being. Using the breath as tool to connect the mind and body, yoga teaches us to slow down and restore. It allows us to be present in our practice, and reminds us to be present in our lives.
It’s been years since I’ve visited Bliss Flow Yoga (pre-baby, pre-wedding, pre-real-job), but they still had my information on file. I quickly (and fondly) remembered the qualities that I appreciated about it so long ago – a locally owned business committed to sustainability, with customer-focused staff. When I first entered the reception area, I was met with the calming scent of warm raspberry tea and a friendly hello from the staff. The environment was as welcoming as it was calm.
I took a 4:45 p.m. power flow class, taught by Ally, whose smile and optimism helped wipe the day away. I found it to be a relaxing experience, with more focus on the mind-body connection than other classes I have attended in the past. The darkened lights and ambience of the studio itself furthered the low-key delve into sun salutations and focused poses. Though I have practiced yoga before and during pregnancy, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this class to novice and experts alike. Ally offered options for modifications, and encouraged each of us to move at our own pace.
The highlight of the class came as a note encouragement from Ally:
Body strong, like a mountain. Breath like the ocean. Mind as vast as the sea.
With her guidance, I made it through the class without making one mental grocery or to-do list, and maintained the intention I had set for the experience. While this may not be the option for those looking for an intense power flow class, it is an excellent class for yogis at any level. The flow was restorative; I left with a clearer mind and a more relaxed body. I think we could all use a little more of that.
