A Madison Mom’s Guide to August 2016

If you are looking for a guide to keep you and your family entertained, we have got you covered! We’ve started a monthly events guide to be sure you don’t miss a thing happening around Madison. Here are the August “need to know” activities. Further happenings, such as library story times, open play/jump/swim, and ongoing Madison Children’s Museum events can all be found on our calendar.

August 2: Verona National Night Out: 5-8:30 pm at Festival Park | The Verona Police Department will be hosting its annual National Night Out Against Crime on August 2 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hometown Festival Grounds near the Verona City Center. This year’s event will include: a landing from the Med Flight Helicopter, horse patrol, K9 demonstration, police officer dunk tank, Kid Care ID program, public safety-related informational booths, and child bounce houses.

August 2: On Your Mark, Get Set, READ: 6-8 pm at Olbrich Botanical Gardens | Pack a picnic supper and head to the Gardens for a fun-filled family concert! Come, rain or shine, at 6:00 p.m. to play with bubbles and make a project with Olbrich Gardens staff. Then, at 7:00 p.m., Dave Landau will get your toes tapping while you munch!

August 3: Middleton Night Out: 5-7:30 pm at Lakeview Park | National Night Out is an opportunity for communities nationwide to promote police-community partnerships, crime prevention & neighborhood camaraderie. This year’s festivities will include free food & drink, prizes, children’s activities, dunk tank and participation by our Fire Department, EMS, Police Department & other local law enforcement & public safety agencies, including K-9 & horse patrols. Med-Flight & DEA helicopters have also been invited. Citizens will be able to tour the squad cars, fire apparatus & ambulances & have a chance to meet & talk with Law Enforcement Officers, Paramedics, Firefighters & more!

August 4: Classic Car Show and  National Night Out: 6-8 pm at Cannery Square, Sun Prairie

August 4-5: Once Upon a Mattress: Overture Center | Children’s Theater of Madison production, 7 pm, 8/4-5, Overture Center-Playhouse. $7. 608-258-4141.

August 6Dinosaurs Love Underpants & Aliens Love Dinopants Storytime: 11 am at Barnes & Noble East Towne and West Towne | Join us for a wacky celebration of underpants from a bestselling author/illustrator team featuring Dinosaurs Love Underpants and Aliens Love Dinopants. Coloring and activities to follow.

August 6: Family Event-Family Nutrition: 9:30am – 12pm at DreamBank | Join Katie from Whole Kids Nutrition and Tara from Yummy Sprout to learn the ins and outs of healthy eating as a family. Bring the whole family and learn how to put together a nutrient dense school lunch, try delicious snacks, take home simple recipes, and much more! Make this workshop an extension of your Farmer’s Market Saturday!

August 6: Saturday Science: Secrets of Math: 10am – 12pm at the UW Discovery Building | This event is free and open to the public. It features interactive exploration stations for kids and families. Uncover the mysteries of math and cybersecurity during this free event held on the first Saturday of every month! Discover math in nature, geometry, patterns, buildings, celestial bodies and more; explore the code that keeps computers running safely; create beautiful mathematical objects; predict the probability of events; and meet math experts.

August 6: Book’n It Run for Literacy: 8-10:30 am at Sheehan Park, Sun Prairie | Book’n It Run offers something for everyone, young and young at heart! USATF-Certified courses for 5K and 10K Run, 5K Walk, 1 Mile Fun Run, Kids’ 100 Meter Dash, Mascot Race, and more! Come out and run for literacy! Proceeds benefit the Sun Prairie Public Library Foundation.

August 5: PBS Kids Get Up and Go! Day: 10am – 12 pm at Gordon Commons | Join in the fun for Wisconsin Public Television’s annual PBS Kids Get Up and Go! Day! This fun-filled, free event encourages children to live healthy and active lives.

August 9: Scoopie Night at Culver’s: 5-8 pm (call to confirm times) at Culver’s on Cottage Grove Road | Tuesday Night Family Fun! Scoopie Night at Culver’s on Cottage Grove Road. Walk-ins welcome.

August 10: Waunakee National Night Out: 5-7 pm at Village Park | The Waunakee Police Department hosts National Night Out every summer. The festivities are held at Village Park on Main Street. National Night Out celebrations take place in over 10,000 communities from all 50 states.

August 12-14 & 19-20: Seussial the Musical: Middleton Performing Arts Center | Now one of the most performed shows in America, Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! TONY winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination–Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. Appropriate for all ages.

August 13: The Super Run 5K: 8-11 am at Brittingham Park | The Super Run is a national series of 5k running events that partners with non-profit organizations to put on superhero themed events to help raise funds and awareness for their cause.

August 13Milk Goes to School Storytime: 11 am at Barnes & Noble East Towne and West Towne | The first days of school are tough and making new friends is even tougher. Join Milk on her journey at Storytime featuring the back-to-school, must-have picture book of the year Milk Goes to School. Activities to follow.

August 13: Mini Sprouts: Things That Go: 10:30-11:30 am at Whole Foods | Join other mini sprouts as we make food fun in this culinary class designed for toddlers and preschoolers.  This hands-on and interactive class will give children the confidence to try new foods. We will prepare some fun and healthy recipes about planes, trains and things that go! Parents are encouraged to participate or watch. Includes recipe packet and coloring sheets to take home. Tickets are $15.

August 13: Family Event-Got Sports? With Keva Sports: 9:30am – 12pm at DreamBank | Come get your game on at DreamBank! KEVA Sports Center is bringing the power and energy of the game downtown for a morning of fun. Get ready for action and participate in basketball, football target toss, a soccer shootout and ring toss. Bring the whole family and get ready to discover your athletic abilities!

August 14: Pond Stuff: 1:30-2:30 pm at the UW-Arboretum | This naturalist-led hike introduces participants to the fascinating life in ponds. Free, no registration required. Meet at the Visitor Center.

August 16: Monona National Night Out: 5-8 pm at Winnequah Park | Join the Monona Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation Departments as we celebrate National Night Out Against Crime!We’ll have bouncy houses, lots of kids’ games, fire trucks, and so much more! Come meet police officers and fire fighters, as well as police K9, Miya. Spread the word, and bring the entire family! Let’s Eat Out food carts will be there, selling plenty of great food.

August 17: Healthy Desserts Culinary Class: 6:30-8:30 pm at Whole Foods | Learn to make healthy desserts that don’t sacrifice taste or elegance. Creations perfect for taking to events or for just a Friday night in with you and your fork:) In this interactive and hands-on class we will make Vegan Island Key Lime Pie, Homemade Lavender Chocolates and Coconut Sea Salt Macaroons! Tickets are $25.

August 17: Costco Mom Hour: 8-10 am at Costco Middleton | Madison Moms Blog and Costco present Mom Hour, a Back to School Shopping Event just for Moms! Have you ever wished Costco opened just a tad bit earlier so you could check your Costco shopping off your list before 10am? Especially during BACK TO SCHOOL time?! Well this is your chance! On Wednesday, August 17th, our Middleton Costco will be opening their doors TWO HOURS EARLY (8am) just for Madison area moms (+kids, dads are always welcome, too)!

August 20: Family Event-Forward Fest: Mini-preneurs to Entrepreneurs: 9:30am – 12pm at DreamBank | Do you have an aspiring entrepreneur in your midst? Help fuel your child’s imagination and let their creativity flow during this fun and interactive event that will get your child thinking of their dream business. They’ll visit the banker, create their advertising brochure and sell their own paper airplanes! Stop in any time between 9:30 and noon for this open house-style event.

August 20: Corn Popping Moon: 8-9:30 pm at the UW-Arboretum | Late summer haze can make this moon rise red in color. Free, no registration required. Meet at the Visitor Center.

August 20Mira Forecasts the Future and The Bot That Scott Built Storytime: 11 am at Barnes & Noble East Towne and West Towne | Join us for a fun-filled Storytime with a little science sprinkled in featuring Mira Forecasts the Future and The Bot That Scott Built. Coloring and activities to follow.

August 20: LEGO Build Event: 4 pm at Barnes & Noble East Towne and West Towne | Kids ages 6 and up are invited to join us for our latest LEGO Build Event. Participants will get to explore their creativity on this entertaining, team-building occasion.

August 20: Tri 4 Schools Middleton Triathlon: Bauman Aquatic Center | Remember to enter the name of the school you would like to donate your money to when you register!

August 21: Yum Yum Fest: Yum Yum Fest 2016 is the third annual end of summer celebration organized by the Madison Area Chefs Network to benefit the Madison Parks Foundation and other local non-profit groups. The festival features dishes and drinks from twenty-four of the most celebrated restaurants in Dane County and beyond, presented in a community-engaging, visually stunning environment. Proceeds from the event benefit the Madison Parks Foundation. Tickets are $5/kids under 12 free. Food Pricing: Food items will cost $5 each. CASH ONLY. An ATM will be provided at the festival.

August 25-26: Disney’s Peter Pan Jr.: The Overture Center Playhouse | Journey to Neverland with Peter, Wendy, Tink and all your favorite characters. Sing joyful and classic tunes such as “Following the Leader” and “You Can Fly!”

August 27: Sassy Cow Ice Cream Social: 12-5 pm at Sassy Cow Creamery | Join us for our end of summer celebration! Visit our farm, eat ice cream and enjoy a day in the country.

August 27: Family Event-Sustainable DIY Chia Pets: 9:30 am – 12 pm at DreamBank | Celebrate sustainability while flexing your creativity at DreamBank. With the help of recycled bottles, you’ll make a Chia Pet that you can take home! Bring the whole family for a morning of eco-friendly fun and inspiration.

August 27Summer Reading Triathlon Closing Ceremony: 11 am at Barnes & Noble East Towne and West Towne | Join us for the Closing Ceremony of our Summer Reading Triathlon. Kids have been voting for their Favorite Hero and Place in books all summer. Voting closes on Sunday, 8/21, and we will announce the local and national Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners at this event, where kids will enjoy activities and get a reward for their excellence in reading over the summer.

August 27: International Red Panda Day Celebration: Henry Vilas Zoo | The Henry Vilas Zoo participates in a variety of wild animal conservation programs. Our Conservation Education Celebrations, which focus on helping save the wild counterparts of the animals at our zoo, are not only fun but also give you the chance to make a difference in the lives of wild animals.

August 28: The Blooming Prairie: 1:30-3:30 pm at the UW-Arboretum | Learn about prairie grasses and flowers and their amazing adaptations for surviving hot summer days. Naturalist-led nature walk from 1:30 to 2:30, indoor activities from 2:30 to 3:30. Free, no registration required. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Olbrich’s Blooming Butterflies – July 14th – August 7th, 10am – 4pm daily at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. – Experience the magnificence of free-flying butterflies while strolling through the tropical Bolz Conservatory. Live butterflies emerge from chrysalises daily in the Conservatory, including low-flyers like the playful yellow and black striped zebras and bright orange julias.

Summer Sounds – Tuesdays from 5-7 pm at Hilldale West Plaza –  Hilldale’s Summer Sounds series features an eclectic selection of our areas best musical talent for your listening pleasure!

Fitchburg Flea Market – Every Sunday from 9-2 at McGaw Park (closed on 6/26, 7/3, 7/17 and 8/21). Vintage collectibles, antiques, bakery, repurposed items, produce, homemade crafts, and household treasures. Free admission. Vendor spots available for $15. Dogs welcome at the park.

Sassy Cow Creamery Tours – Fridays from 2-4 pm. Join us for FREE farm tours and learn about how we care for our cows. Just show up at our creamery!

Eugster’s Summer Petting Farm – Open daily 10am-5pm June 10th-September 16th. $5.50 per person (Age 1 & Under Free). Admission includes Eugster’s 15-acre Petting Farm and optional animal feeding.

Burgers and Bluegrass – 4-8 pm on Thursdays at Whole Foods Market – Our summer series of grilling out and listening to fantastic tunes kicks off with music from SpareTime Bluegrass Band. They will be playing from 5-7pm, and we will be grilling out from 4-8pm. Join us for burgers, brats, and more! Every Thursday night thru August.

Friday Fun Days at the Monona Community Pool – Transform a normal Friday into a Fun Friday! Almost every Friday form 12:30 – 3:30 pm, our wacky staff will plan a variety of water games and other activities for children of all ages. Patrons can also bring their own floatation devices to enjoy some Friday fun! Pool Pass or daily admission is required for entry.

Art Cart – The Art Cart is a free, traveling art program that provides creative, outdoor art-making experiences to children ages 3+ and their families. Activities include both group and individual projects, with a variety of materials. See website for schedule and map.

Summer Concert Series – Winnequuah Park, Monona: Join the Friends of the Monona Senior Center, Inc. for a free evening of music! Bring your family, friends, picnic basket, blanket, and lawn chairs. Come relax and enjoy this wonderful community music series with us.

Car Seat Checks – The goal of the Safe Kids Injury Prevention Program is to help educate families on safety and injury prevention. A large component of our work is providing safety information and services to our Dane County communities. Car seat checks are available throughout the Madison area, see website for dates and locations. Appointments are required for car seat checks. Toddler Story & Stroll – Learn and play with your youngster in this fun, hands-on series that focuses on nature and the seasonal changes of spring. Classes include a story, a stroll through the outdoor gardens, and theme-related activities designed for you and your preschooler to spend quality time together. Sign up for one class or the entire series. Ages 2-4 with an adult. Limited space; register early!

Bird and Nature Walks –  1:30-3 pm at various Madison parks – Free, family-friendly Bird and Nature Walks are offered year-round on Sunday afternoons 1:30-3:00 pm by Madison Parks and FUN: Friends of Urban Nature partner groups. Join the FUN!

Kids & Pets Storytime – Animart Pet Store – 10:30 am – 11 am weekly on Tuesdays. Read with the Story Time Pet of the Week. A fun event for parents and children. Admission is $1.89 + tax per child.

Museum Storytime – UW Madison Geology Museum – 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at 10:30 am. Museum storytime is geared toward preschool-aged children and each week features a book, museum specimens and a craft to take home. No reservations required, except for groups larger than 10. Free.

Open Art Studio – Use the Monroe Street Arts Center studio as your own! Work on a self-directed project under the guidance of an experienced art teacher. We will provide all of the art materials and one planned project per class to get you started. This is a drop-in class, but please call ahead to hold a spot, 608.232.1510. Cost is $12 per class or $48 for 5 classes with an Open Art Studio Pass.

The Crafty Project – The Crafty Project does monthly Kiddo Crafty Events at their creative studio. Additionally, The Crafty Project studio is a fabulous location for mom’s to get together and have a night out and create. They have a fun schedule of classes and offer private events.

Mommy & Me Hour – 10 am Tuesdays at Nicki’s Diapers. Join us for the NEW Mommy & Me Hour at the Nicki’s Diapers Madison Retail Store! Each week we will have a topic to discuss in an informal, friendly environment.

Mother Baby Hour – Located at the Meriter Business Center-See website for various days/times. Mother Baby Hour is a time for moms and their babies to get together to ask questions, express concerns, learn about resources and share stories. A Registered Nurse/Community Educator facilitates the groups and offers a weekly topic. Join us as early as the first week after your baby is born!
